Launching Carbon Project Explorer

Data Accessibility in Carbon Markets

The journey into the carbon markets is seldom a straightforward one for anyone. When I began delving into the carbon markets a few years ago, my goal was straightforward: to understand and contribute to the decarbonization efforts that were gaining momentum globally.

As I navigated through the complexities of these markets, I quickly realized a significant challenge—the absence of a single, user-friendly resource that provided up-to-date, critical data about carbon projects. Information was scattered across numerous registries and markets, each with its own way of maintaining data, creating a fragmented and inefficient ecosystem. Access to this vital information often came with a high cost or effort, making it inaccessible for many who wished to participate in these markets.

Recognizing this, I envisioned a platform that could bring down these barriers by aggregating and harmonizing data from various sources, providing a transparent, consistent, and comparable view of carbon projects. This vision led to the creation of the Carbon Project Explorer at CarbonMarketsHQ.

We are driven by a belief that for carbon credits to mature and scale akin to other commodity markets or financial instruments, visibility and transparency across projects in different geographies is crucial.

About the Platform

We're thrilled to launch the beta version of the Carbon Project Explorer, a tech-first platform designed to transform how stakeholders discover and analyze carbon projects across the globe. We track over 22000 carbon projects from major registries such as Verra, Gold Standard, CDM, ACR, CAR making it the largest, most comprehensive and openly accessible database in the world.

The increasing number of players entering the decarbonization race will inevitably look for self-serving, due-diligence tools that can offer readily available market information. This is where the our project explorer fills a critical gap. Inspired by notable open initiatives like the Berkeley Carbon Trading project and Carbon Plan's Offset DB, as well as proprietary closed systems like Allied Offsets and Viridios AI and Sylvera - our broader vision is to democratize access to carbon market data, empowering stakeholders to make informed decisions and drive effective climate action.

Key Features

  1. Extensive Projects Database: Includes over 22,000 historical and ongoing carbon projects from major registries such as Verra, Gold Standard, CDM, ACR, and CAR. More registry integrations coming soon.
  2. Comprehensive Data Coverage: Provides detailed data on project issuances, retirements, cancellations, SDG cobenefits and more.
  3. Robust Data Model: Inspired by World Bank-tested data model also used by CAD Trust, our data pipelines are ready for scaling to other registries, along with Article 6 markets and compliance schemes like CORSIA.
  4. Upcoming Premium Features: Development of credit pricing and rating features is in progress, with plans to partner with leading data providers.
  5. API Access: Post-beta, we will offer API access for programmatic retrieval and interaction with project data. Please sign up for early access here.

Behind the scenes: Architecture & Tech

For the nerds

Project explorer is built on our state-of-the-art data pipelines that seamlessly integrate diverse data sources. This includes dynamic inputs such as sheets, PDFs, and APIs, transforming them into structured formats that feed into our PostgreSQL and NoSQL databases. We're focusing on building capabilities, instead of one off data use cases, allowing us to rapidly prototype and build use cases our users find most beneficial.

We utilize Large Language Models (LLMs) wherever needed, to parse unstructured data, a common challenge in the carbon markets where PDFs and CSVs abound. They allow us to extract essential insights from complex unstructured data.

Open Source Commitment

Once the platform moves out of beta, we plan to open-source our registry indexer service. We wish to harness the collective expertise of the community, allowing us to enhance the platform continually in an open-source manner. By making our processes transparent and collaborative, we aim to maintain the highest standards of data quality and usability.

Challenges with Harmonizing Data

Harmonizing data from different carbon registries has been one of the more formidable challenges we've faced while developing the Carbon Project Explorer.

Each registry brings its own set of naming conventions and project processes, which often leads to discrepancies that can significantly complicate the task of data analysis. Few examples of the issues we encountered:

  • Inconsistency in Data Types: Fields across registries are not uniformly formatted. For example, Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) might be presented as a list of numbers in one registry and as a full text string of names in another.
  • Variations in Project Typing: The same project type or sector might be described differently across registries
  • Handling Duplicates: Duplicates can appear in numerous forms—whether it's an extra space, the presence or absence of hyphens, or slight variations in naming. This is particularly challenging with enumerated values or picklists where precision is crucial.
  • Differing Project Statuses: For instance, the Gold Standard might label a project's status as "Gold Standard Certified Design," whereas Verra and other registries might simply use "Listed" to describe a similar state.
  • Inconsistent Credit Type Updates: Some registries do not consistently update whether credits are for removals or avoidance
  • While the CAD Trust sets a commendable standard in some areas, accessing complete data requires setting up a complete subscriber node tech infrastructure, which is beyond difficult for non-technical teams.

Addressing these challenges requires a meticulous approach to data integration and normalization. Our team has tackled these issues head-on, ensured that despite the underlying complexities, the user experience remains straightforward and effective. By managing these intricacies behind the scenes, we ensure that our users receive the most reliable and high-quality data available on carbon projects. This commitment to data quality and user experience is fundamental to our mission at CarbonMarketsHQ.
